day 23
The Night Auditor got involved, so boy oh boy did we toss stuff!
The 4-Her hid Highschoolgeekgirl's new refrigerator magnets so despair and ill will abounded...
After cleaning out two bookshelves (total removed: 5 books-on-tape and several books), the squirrel was not found. But the bookshelves looked sooooo much better!

Day 22
Wish I could get rid of the cat in my lap...she's 17 years old, blind in one eye, mostly deaf and seems to miss the litterbox about as often as she hits it. But at least she's warm...
So, if I can't get rid of the cat, what should I get rid of? Maybe I'll find a video.
Let's say I got rid of a video today, and I'll make sure it's the truth. Once the cat's off my lap.

day 18
Well, today's tossed item is better than yesterday's...the clothes had been heaped at the foot of the bed for a couple weeks before I took them out yesterday.
Today, I tossed a donut maker that I got at a garage sale. I haven't figured out exactly how a plastic cylinder with a spring in the middle can make a donut out of batter, but if you want it, it's yours.

day 17
I guess taking the trash out to the street doesn't count. So once again, I'm getting rid of clothes.
You'd think I did a lot of shopping...or didn't wear very many clothes...to get rid of clothes all the time.
I do like shopping at garage sales and Goodwill, I grant you that. But as to wearing few items, right now I'm wearing a winter vest, a fleece jacket, a sweater and a long sleeved tee shirt. And, of course, pants, shoes and socks.
So I really don't know where all these random surplus clothes come from.

day 16
Got rid of a lot of money. In exchange, got a new minivan.
A minivan. I ask you, what self-respecting person with nearly grown kids gets a minivan? But the 4-Her liked the dvd player.
And that's why we got a minivan and by doing so, got rid of a lot of money.

Day 15
I didn't know what I was going to get rid of today. The 4-Her and Highschoolgeekgirl had done some room cleaning, and there was a big pile of books in the middle of their room...thought I might have to use those for mine, but it sure seemed like cheating.
Then I realized that if we're going to pick up a new used car tonight, I'd probably need my drivers license (which has, of course, been missing for about a year).
The best and most likely hiding place: the area around and under the dresser/tv stand in our bedroom, an area rife with yuck factor. Sigh.
So I dug around under the dresser, and behind the dresser, and in front of the dresser, using a flashlight, a broken yardstick and a Louisville Slugger (that didn't help much, actually).
Didn't find the drivers license, but I found a lot of papers that we don't need anymore.
So tonight's item: a plastic garbage bag full of old papers, broken pens, dust, yarn, etc.
Plus I found well over a dollar in change, mostly quarters, dimes and nickels, so I got that going for me.

Day 14
A bunch of old clothes and a few plastic plant four or six packs. Of course, going to Goodwill today may not have been the best idea in the interest of getting rid...came home with two pairs of pants and a green velvet jacket.
Oh well, I needed new pants for work. Maybe now I'll quit wearing the stained brown jeans at least once a week.

Day 12
Today, I was given some nice Christmas things, which I really appreciate. I hadn't expected a gift, and it was so nice to get these things. But I don't need anything more, and the things in the gift, while nice and fine and pretty and good, are better off in a home where they'll be appreciated.
So out to the porch they went!

day 9
Thanks to the Night Auditor, today we got rid of about five CD jewel cases, two books on tape (Congo and a double set of Max Brand (never listened to; we tried, but were bored. We did make it through Congo on a long car trip), two Prairie Home Companion radio shows and a Kenny G CD I bought by accident (forgot to look inside the case when purchasing for the Night Auditor's birthday. The case claimed the cd was a soundtrack to Sleepless in Seattle).

day 7
Posting next day, but really! I did toss two Christmas ornaments and one book.
I bought the book at an estate sale on Saturday, read it, liked it, couldn't have found it at the library, and I don't need it anymore. I think I got $1.00 worth of pleasure from it, and I don't regret the buying or the tossing. And yes, it'll go to the library book sale or an antique store or something.
Anybody want it? It's called Chicken Every Sunday or something like that, and it's the story of growing up in a boarding house in Tucson in the early years of the 20th century.

Day 6
Today was, unexpectedly, a really nice day. I didn't want to spend it inside getting rid of stuff (and besides, the Night Auditor was sleeping), I wanted to be outside as much as possible.
So I took my gift certificate to the nursery (thank you, Night Auditor!) and with the help of the 4-Her, bought several plants for the front yard and some seeds for front and back.
And in order to plant them, I had to pull up all the clover filling up the front yard. Brought two of the chickens out, hoping they'd help get rid of the weeds (they cowered under the bushes against the porch...no help at all. Didn't even take any of the grubs I dug up)
So today's tossed stuff: a whole lot of weedy clover and some nasty prickly spreading weeds.

Day 4
Today, just got rid of some clothes: two sweatshirts, one camisole, one pretty bag, a sash and a scarf.
4H took all my energy tonight; nothing left for sorting through disgusting boxes of moldy books.
Maybe tomorrow night?

Day 3
I'm not done getting rid of stuff today, but my brother-in-law just called to tell us about a tv appearance for him and his lion cub, so I'm writing while the computer's turned on. You can see the lion cub here:
href="http://www.kmph.com/Global/story.asp?s=7596841"
And you can see information about where the cub lives here:

But back to getting rid of things: tonight I cleaned out the hall closet where our games and bedding is stored. I ignored the bedding, since there's nothing I want to get rid of yet, but pulled everything out of the three or four shelves stuffed with board games and other junk for (fictional, at least at our house) family game nights.
I think some of the shelves have been tidied once or twice since we moved in four years ago, but the bottom shelf, as far as I can remember, hasn't. Ever. And boy, was it appalling.
Among the fuzzy ... somethings, dust, ponytail holders, tiny Christmas ornaments and other odd things that had established residence in the closet, we found four (maybe five) versions of Cranium, at least three varieties of Monopoly, two different Scene It games, and more playing cards than we know what to do with. The shelves are tidied, game pieces are mostly in zipper bags, and a system for keeping things in place is theoretically in place.
What did I get rid of? Two loads of games went to the back porch for later visits to Goodwill or a spring garage sale, one puzzle is designated for the nephews, and a garbage bag full of bits and pieces is at the curb with the rest of tomorrow's trash.

Day 2
Had help today: kids complained about all the broken umbrellas, and I got sick of tripping over the broken office chair in the living room. So out they went...the umbrellas into the trash, the chair to the back porch to be taken apart for later use in a different form.
Decided I can't count the innumerable pieces of paper that should be (and sometimes are) thrown out around here every day. Too bad.

Day 1
If I weren't a procrastinator, I wouldn't be living in a house full of clutter...so here's my resolution:
get rid of one thing every day for a year. Starting today.
Today I got rid of two Christmas towels, a bunch of ornaments I've never liked, a black sheer tunic top thing and an '80s style green blazer that shrank (even though the lining didn't).
Too bad the rules say I can't count any of this toward tomorrow's get rid of.
